La excentricidad, por supuesto, es la unidad, por lo que sólo son necesarios cinco elementos. En lugar del semieje mayor, se suele especificar la parábola por la distancia del perihelio\(q\). Presumiblemente ninguna órbita es nunca exactamente parabólica, lo que implica una excentricidad de exactamente una. Sin embargo, muchos cometas de larga distancia se mueven en órbitas grandes y excéntricas, y los vemos sobre un arco tan corto cerca del perihelio que no es posible calcular órbitas elípticas precisas, y generalmente luego ajustamos una órbita parabólica a las observaciones.
