Considerar un conjunto de cargas\(Q_1, Q_2, Q_3 ...\) cuyos vectores de posición con respecto a un punto\(O\) son\(\textbf{r}_1\)\(\textbf{r}_2\),,\(\textbf{r}_3\)... con respecto a algún punto O. La suma vectorial
\[ \textbf{p} = \sum_i Q_i \textbf{r}_i\]
es el momento dipolar del sistema de cargas con respecto al punto O. Se puede ver de inmediato que la unidad SI tiene que ser C m.
