Supongamos que los dos cilindros están conectados a una batería para que la diferencia de potencial entre ellos sea\(V\), y la carga por unidad de longitud en el cilindro interior es\(+\lambda \text{C m}^{-1}\), y en el cilindro exterior es\(-\lambda \text{C m}^{-1}\). Hemos visto (Subsección 2.2.3) que la diferencia de potencial entre los cilindros en tales circunstancias es\(\frac{\lambda}{2\pi \epsilon}\ln (b/a)\). Por lo tanto la capacitancia por unidad de longitud,\(C'\), es

Esto no es de ninguna manera únicamente de interés académico. La capacitancia por unidad de longitud del cable coaxial (“coaxial”) es una propiedad importante del cable, y esta es la fórmula utilizada para calcularlo.
