La primera ecuación de Maxwell, que describe el campo electrostático, se deriva inmediatamente del teorema de Gauss, que a su vez es una consecuencia de la ley cuadrada inversa de Coulomb. El teorema de Gauss establece que la integral superficial del fiel d electrostático\(\textbf{D}\) sobre una superficie cerrada es igual a la carga encerrada por esa superficie. Eso es

Él re\(\rho\) i s el cargo por unidad de volumen.
Pero la integral superficial de un campo vectorial sobre una superficie cerrada es igual al volumen integral de su divergencia, y por lo tanto

Por lo tanto

Esta es la primera de las ecuaciones de Maxwell.
