Piense en un aro,\(M\) radio de masa\(R\), rodando a lo largo de un plano plano a velocidad\(V\). Tiene energía cinética traslacional\(\frac{1}{2} M V^{2}\)\(\Omega=V / R\), velocidad angular y momento de inercia\(I=M R^{2}\) por lo que su energía cinética angular\(\frac{1}{2} I \Omega^{2}=\frac{1}{2} M V^{2}\) y su energía cinética total es\(M V^{2}\).
Pero también podríamos haber pensado en ello como una rotación sobre el punto de contacto —recuerden, ese punto del aro está momentáneamente en reposo. La velocidad angular volvería a ser\(\Omega\), pero ahora con momento de inercia, a partir del teorema de ejes paralelos,\(I=M R^{2}+M R^{2}=2 M R^{2}\), dando la misma energía cinética total, pero ahora toda rotacional.
