Las notas sobre instrumentos musicales están organizadas en escalas y nos gustaría tener una escala donde obtengamos el mayor número de combinaciones que suenen bien juntas. También nos gustaría estandarizar la escala de tal manera que si construimos otros instrumentos, dos instrumentos que tocan juntos puedan tocar el mismo tono. Esto resulta ser más difícil de lo que parecería. La elección de escala es arbitraria y diferentes culturas han elegido de manera diferente.
