Estaremos aprendiendo que hay dos clases de energía libre.
Ahí está la energía libre de Helmholtz. Los símbolos comúnmente utilizados para esto son A (del alemán die Arbeit — obra) o F.
Y ahí está la energía libre de Gibbs. Los símbolos comúnmente utilizados para esto son G − o F!
Es lamentable que algunos escritores utilicen simplemente el término “energía libre”, utilizando el símbolo F, sin especificar cuál, o incluso dar evidencia de que son conscientes de la diferencia. He visto el símbolo F usado casi igualmente a menudo para Helmholtz, Gibbs o energías libres no especificadas.
En estas notas utilizaré el símbolo A para la energía libre de Helmholtz y G para la energía libre de Gibbs, y evitaré el símbolo F.
