Descubrimientos que conducen a la astronomía moderna
Claudio Ptolemeo (~100-170 d.C.), también conocido simplemente como Ptolomeo, fue un astrónomo, geógrafo y matemático egipcio (de ascendencia griega) que se hizo conocido en la comunidad filosófica de Alejandría en el siglo II. Aunque Ptolomeo hizo una variedad de contribuciones importantes, si no interesantes, al conocimiento de sus tiempos, quizás su más significativo, y duradero, fueron sus observaciones de las órbitas de planetas y constelaciones. Promovió el modelo geocéntrico, que la Tierra era el centro del Universo observable. Los antiguos astrónomos griegos, romanos y musulmanes siguieron el modelo geocéntrico (o sistema ptolemaico) que describía al Universo con la Tierra en su centro.
