Usar material fuente de manera efectiva es una parte importante de la escritura académica, ya sea que esté citando, parafraseando o resumiendo. Una de las tareas más fáciles que cualquier profesor puede darte es que leas y respondas a un artículo o ensayo. Tu papel como escritor a menudo implicará tener una “conversación” escrita con tu (s) fuente (s).
Si se hace bien, una frase de señal puede lograr tres cosas:
- puede configurar sin problemas el contexto del material que está a punto de usar
- puede agregar credibilidad a tu escritura
- puede mostrar a sus lectores dónde terminan sus ideas y su material fuente
comienza (lo que te ayuda a evitar el plagio)
Los siguientes ejemplos ilustran el poder de la frase de señal:

- Un artículo de portada reciente en Newsweek revela que... (cita).
- La escritora Naomi Wolf sostiene que... (cita).
