En un proyecto de un año, habitualmente hay tres reportes de avance, uno después de tres, seis y nueve meses. Dependiendo del tamaño del informe de avance, la duración e importancia del proyecto, y el destinatario, el informe de avance puede tomar las siguientes formas:
- Memo: un informe breve e informal a alguien dentro de su organización
- Carta —Un informe breve e informal enviado a alguien ajeno a su organización
- Informe formal: un informe formal enviado a alguien ajeno a su organización
