A principios del siglo XIX, la agricultura sureña producida por esclavos alimentó la industria norteña producida por trabajadores asalariados y gestionada por la nueva clase media. Nuevo transporte, nueva maquinaria y nuevas organizaciones de trabajo integraron los bolsillos previamente aislados de la economía colonial en una operación industrial nacional. La industrialización y la economía monetaria unieron diversas regiones al mismo tiempo que la ideología alejó a los estadounidenses. Al celebrar la libertad de contrato que distinguió al asalariado del sirviente contratado de generaciones anteriores o del esclavo en el campo algodonero sureño, los líderes políticos reclamaron el legado de la Revolución Americana para el Norte. Pero el auge del trabajo infantil industrial, las demandas de los trabajadores para sindicalizarse, la vulnerabilidad económica de las mujeres y la afluencia de inmigrantes no anglos dejaron a muchos estadounidenses cuestionando el significado de la libertad después de la revolución del mercado.
