El “consenso” estadounidense de posguerra tenía una gran promesa. A pesar de la amenaza inminente de una guerra nuclear, millones de personas experimentaron una prosperidad sin precedentes y una identidad estadounidense cada vez más orgullosa. La prosperidad parecía prometer niveles de vida cada vez más altos. Pero las cosas se desmoronaron, y el centro no pudo aguantar: destrozada por la contradicción, la disidencia, la discriminación y la desigualdad, la Sociedad Afluente se paró sobre el precipicio de la revolución.
