En 1969, los estadounidenses aclamaron el alunizaje como una victoria profunda en la carrera espacial contra la Unión Soviética. Este logro histórico cumplió la promesa del difunto John F. Kennedy, quien había declarado en 1961 que Estados Unidos pondría a un hombre en la luna a finales de la década. Pero mientras Neil Armstrong dijo que sus pasos marcaron “un salto gigante para la humanidad”, y los estadounidenses se maravillaron del logro, el breve momento de asombro solo puntuó años de confusión. La guerra de Vietnam desilusionó a una generación, los disturbios sacudieron ciudades, las protestas golpearon los campus y los asesinatos le robaron a la nación a muchos de sus líderes. El espíritu progresista de una década compleja había decaydo. Se avecinaba la incertidumbre.
