¿Qué tienen en común el arte modernista, la psicología freudiana y la Gran Depresión además de la coincidencia cronológica? Todos fueron, de diferentes maneras, síntomas de disrupción y una profunda sensación de malestar que invadió la cultura occidental después de la Primera Guerra Mundial La civilización europea era poderosa y segura de sí misma antes de la guerra, maestra de más del 80% del globo, y a la vanguardia de la ciencia y la tecnología. Esa civilización surgió de cuatro años de derramamiento de sangre económicamente destrozada, políticamente desunida y de muchas maneras escéptica ante la posibilidad de un mayor progreso. Fue en este contexto incierto donde surgió la filosofía política más destructiva de la historia moderna: el fascismo, y su rama aún más horrorosa, el nazismo.
