Al escribir en tres o cuatro partes, evite que dos voces cualesquiera se muevan en quintas paralelas u octavas paralelas (y sus equivalentes de octava, doceavos paralelos y unisones paralelos). En las épocas renacentista, barroca, clásica y romántica, se pensó que estos paralelismos objetivos destruían la independencia de las voces. Se consideraron aceptables las 3rds, 4tas y 6tas paralelas. Generalmente no se utilizaron 2nds y 7ths paralelos.
