La aviación ha transformado drásticamente la sociedad en los últimos 100 años. Los beneficios económicos y sociales en todo el mundo han sido inmensos para reducir el planeta con el transporte eficiente y rápido de personas y bienes. No obstante, se deben enfrentar retos alentadores para hacer frente a la demanda esperada, pero también para atender las sensibilidades sociales.
Estos retos han llevado a la formación del Consejo Asesor para la Investigación Aeronáutica en Europa (ACARE) para definir una Agenda Estratégica de Investigación (SRA) para la aeronáutica y el transporte aéreo en Europa ACARE [1]. Los objetivos establecidos por la SRA han tenido una clara influencia en la investigación aeronáutica actual, entregando importantes iniciativas y beneficios para la industria de la aviación, incluyendo entre otros la Iniciativa Tecnológica Conjunta de Cielo Limpio, que persigue una aviación más verde, y la Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) Joint Emprendimiento, que persigue un sistema ATM más eficiente. También se han impulsado iniciativas en la misma dirección en Estados Unidos dentro del sistema Next Generation of Air Transportation (NextGen).
