Antes de adentrarse en los fundamentos del vuelo atmosférico, es interesante identificar los elementos fundamentales de la aeronave 2. Como se señaló anteriormente, existen varias configuraciones. El foco estará en los aviones comerciales que vuelan en regímenes subsónicos altos, los más comunes. La figura 2.8 muestra las partes principales de una aeronave comercial típica.
El cuerpo central del avión, que alberga a la tripulación y la carga útil (pasajeros, equipaje y carga), es el fuselaje. El ala es el principal contribuyente a la fuerza de elevación. Las superficies situadas en la cola o el empenaje de la aeronave se denominan estabilizador horizontal y estabilizador vertical. El motor se ubica típicamente bajo el ala protegida por las llamadas góndolas (algunas configuraciones con tres motores localizan un motor en la cola).
