La fuerza principal causada por el tren de aterrizaje es un choque ascendente durante el aterrizaje. Así, están presentes los amortiguadores, absorbiendo la energía de aterrizaje y reduciendo así la fuerza que se hace sobre la estructura. El trabajo extra generado durante un aterrizaje duro resulta en un incremento muy grande en la fuerza sobre la estructura.
