Las estructuras de ingeniería civil están diseñadas para soportar varios tipos de cargas y posibles combinaciones de cargas que podrían actuar sobre ellas durante su vida útil. La estimación precisa de las magnitudes de estas cargas es un aspecto muy importante del proceso de análisis estructural. Existen códigos locales e internacionales, así como reportes de investigación y documentos, que ayudan a los diseñadores en este sentido. Las cargas estructurales se pueden clasificar ampliamente en cuatro grupos: cargas muertas, cargas vivas, cargas de impacto y cargas ambientales. Estas cargas se describen brevemente en los siguientes apartados.
