Supongamos que tenemos agua fluyendo en una región\(A\) del avión. Entonces en cada punto\((x, y)\) en\(A\) el agua tiene una velocidad. En general, esta velocidad cambiará con el tiempo. Dejaremos\(F\) reposar el campo vectorial de velocidad y podremos escribir
\[F(x, y, t) = (u(x, y, t), v(x, y, t)).\]
Los argumentos\((x, y, t)\) indican que la velocidad depende de estas tres variables. En general, acortaremos el nombre al campo de velocidad (Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\)).
