Definimos la frecuencia de colisionesfrecuencia de colisión\({\widetilde{\nu }}_{12}\), como el número de colisiones por unidad de tiempo entre una sola molécula de tipo 1 y cualquiera de las moléculas de tipo 2 presentes en el mismo contenedor. Nos encontramos\({\widetilde{\nu }}_{12}=N_2\pi {\sigma }^2_{12}\left\langle v_{12}\right\rangle\). Si hay\(N_1\) moléculas de tipo 1 presentes en una unidad de volumen del gas, el número total de colisiones entre las moléculas tipo 1 y las moléculas tipo 2 es\(N_1\) veces mayor. Para mayor claridad, vamos a referirnos al número total de tales colisiones, por unidad de volumen y por unidad de tiempo, como la tasa de colisión,\({\rho }_{12}\). Tenemos
