Para un sistema cerrado que experimenta un cambio en las propiedades termodinámicas bajo la restricción adiabática, el calor no se cruza entre el sistema y el entorno. El sistema está aislado térmicamente (es decir, encerrado adiabáticamente) de los alrededores. La Primera Ley para sistemas cerrados tiene la siguiente forma.
\[\Delta \mathrm{U}=\mathrm{q}+\mathrm{w}\]
Para los cambios bajo la restricción adiabática,\(\mathrm{q}\) es cero [1]. Luego para los cambios adiabáticos,
\[\Delta \mathrm{U}=\mathrm{w} .\]
