- La energía interna de un sistema se identifica con el movimiento aleatorio y desordenado de las moléculas; la energía total (interna) en un sistema incluye energía potencial y cinética. Esto contrasta con la energía externa que es una función de la muestra con respecto al entorno exterior (por ejemplo, energía cinética si la muestra se está moviendo o energía potencial si la muestra está a una altura del suelo, etc.).
