Por el sistema IUPAC, el sufijo -oic se agrega al prefijo identificando la cadena hidrocarbonada que incluye el carbono carboxilo:

El nombre del sustituyente para\(-CO_2H\) es carboxi:
Para las sales de ácidos carboxílicos, el sufijo -oico del ácido se convierte en -oato con el contraión nombrado como una palabra separada:
