El rutenio es un metal de transición que, al igual que el titanio, puede transferir un electrón a un haluro de glicosil. La reacción fotoquímica de [Ru (bpy) 3] 2+ con una amina terciaria produce [Ru (bpy) 3] +, un complejo que luego dona un electrón a un bromuro de glicosil para formar un radical piranos-1-ilo (Esquema 10). 29,30 El radical formado de esta manera a partir del bromuro 20 es capaz de agregarse a una variedad de alquenos deficientes en electrones (eq 13).
