En el resto del cuerpo, el exceso neto de ultrafiltración sobre reabsorción es del orden de dos a cuatro litros diarios. El exceso neto en los capilares glomerulares se conoce como tasa de filtración glomerular (TFG) y es de 180 litros/ día.

Debido a la gran pérdida de líquido y la impermeabilidad a las proteínas, la presión oncótica en el capilar glomerular aumenta a lo largo de su longitud. (Este aumento de la presión oncótica es importante en la reabsorción desde el túbulo proximal hacia los capilares peritubulares) |

La ecuación de flujo discutida anteriormente simplifica a solo 4 términos:

El término que varía a lo largo de la longitud del capilar glomerular es OP GC. Esta es una situación bastante diferente a la que ocurre en la mayoría de los lechos capilares tisulares, donde el cambio que se produce a lo largo de la longitud del capilar es una disminución de la presión hidrostática capilar. El glomérulo es diferente debido a la gran pérdida de líquido que se produce.
La presión hidrostática en los capilares glomerulares se ve afectada por el equilibrio entre constricción arteriolar aferente y eferente.
