Hasta este punto he definido lo que se entiende por convergencia, y he definido el poder como la diferencia entre las convergencias final e inicial. Afirme sin pruebas fórmulas para los poderes de una lente, una interfaz refractante y un espejo. Ahora es el momento de derivarlos. Recuerden que en este capítulo solo estoy tratando con ángulos pequeños (de hecho si los ángulos no son pequeños, un objeto puntual no dará como resultado una imagen puntual) y consecuentemente voy a suponer que cualquier ángulo es igual a su tangente o a su seno, y voy a escribir la ley de Snell en la forma
