Todo el sonido comienza con algo que vibra. La caña en un clarinete vibra, las cuerdas vocales en la garganta de un cantante vibran, el aire que fluye sobre la boquilla de una flauta oscila, y el cono del altavoz en tu estéreo o en un auricular vibra. En este capítulo investigamos un tipo particular de vibración llamada simple movimiento armónico. La mayoría de las vibraciones en los instrumentos musicales y la voz humana pueden describirse aproximadamente por simple movimiento armónico.
