Una vez tomada la decisión de emigrar, el agricultor noruego y su familia tuvieron que separar sus pertenencias personales en qué guardar y qué abandonar permanentemente antes de embarcarse a Estados Unidos para una vida mejor. Algunos objetos que seleccionaron eran elementos prácticos necesarios para sobrevivir en sus nuevas vidas, mientras que otros eran elementos sentimentales. Pero cada uno podría convertirse en un vaso de nostalgia y un recuerdo de patrimonio. Cajas pequeñas como esta se usaban para comida en el viaje o para las pertenencias más personales. Este baúl se transmitió en la familia Langland antes de que Knud Langland, primo de Isaak Dahle le regalara a Little Norway.
