De la agitación de una guerra mundial surgió una nueva economía mundial cambiante y creciente. El mundo también se separó en el bloque occidental de naciones respaldadas por Estados Unidos y los países comunistas apoyados por la Unión Soviética. La propaganda, el capitalismo y el libre mercado, la era nuclear y la carrera espacial fueron importantes influencias sociales. Los artistas también estaban redefiniendo y remodelando el arte para reflejar las imágenes culturales masivas en expansión para expresar emociones a través de la abstracción. Muchos artistas huyeron del caos de Europa y se mudaron a América, trasladando el centro del arte a Nueva York en ese momento. Los movimientos se desviaron de los conceptos de objetos y realismo al proceso de pintura, la liberación del color, las líneas y las formas para reflejar las nuevas direcciones del mundo.
