En lugar de ser válidos o inválidos, los argumentos inductivos son fuertes o débiles, lo que describe cuán probable es que la conclusión sea verdadera. Otra diferencia crucial es que la certeza deductiva es imposible en sistemas no axiomáticos, como la realidad, dejando al razonamiento inductivo como la ruta primaria hacia el conocimiento (probabilístico) de dichos sistemas.
- 5.2: Cogencia y Argumentos Fuertes
- Se dice que los argumentos inductivos son fuertes o débiles. No hay un corte absoluto entre fuerza y debilidad, pero algunos argumentos serán muy fuertes y otros muy débiles, por lo que la distinción sigue siendo útil aunque no sea precisa. Un argumento fuerte es aquel en el que, si las premisas fueran ciertas, la conclusión sería muy probable que fuera cierta. Un argumento débil es aquel en el que la conclusión no se desprende de las premisas.

- El razonamiento bayesiano trata sobre cómo revisar nuestras creencias a la luz de la evidencia. Empezaremos considerando un escenario en el que la fuerza de la evidencia tenga números claros adjuntos.
- 5.6: Razonamiento jurídico y razonamiento moral
- En esta discusión del razonamiento moral aprenderemos a decidir qué hacer. En este sentido, el razonamiento moral es la parte más práctica del proceso. Cuando razonamos sobre moralidad construimos argumentos, igual que cuando razonamos sobre cualquier otra cosa. Pero los argumentos que involucran proposiciones morales tienen que construirse de una manera especial. Esto es en parte para ayudarnos a evitar la Falacia Naturalista. Pero también es para ayudar a que nuestros argumentos sobre la moralidad sean consistentes.
