Por ahora, basta con reconocer que el punto clave es que cuando alguna persona (o grupo) es inconsistente, al menos una de las cosas que dicen debe ser falsa.
La gente rara vez es descaradamente inconsistente. No solemos decir algo en un suspiro y luego decimos exactamente lo contrario en el siguiente. Pero la gente a veces dice una cosa en un escenario y luego la niega en otro. Los políticos, por ejemplo, suelen decir a diferentes audiencias lo que creen que el público quiere escuchar, pero todos somos susceptibles a la tentación de hacer esto.
La gente también a veces promete hacer varias cosas que no se pueden hacer todas juntas. Por ejemplo, alguien que se postula para un cargo puede prometer recortar impuestos, mantener el gasto del Seguro Social y Medicare en sus niveles actuales y reforzar la defensa. Es poco probable que las tres cosas se puedan hacer a la vez.
Las organizaciones también pueden enviar mensajes inconsistentes. Por ejemplo, un miembro de una organización grande puede hacer un anuncio de manera que permita a otros miembros mantener la “negabilidad” (es decir, que les permita evitar asumir responsabilidad por ello).
Para poner a prueba tu comprensión, di lo que está mal con el siguiente argumento:
“Bueno, estoy de acuerdo en que su argumento es deductivamente válido y que todas sus premisas son ciertas. Pero sigo pensando que su conclusión es falsa, y ¿quién eres tú para decir que me equivoco?”
