Para 1763, los estadounidenses nunca habían estado más unidos. Lucharon y celebraron juntos. Pero también reconocieron que no se les consideraba ciudadanos británicos de pleno derecho, que se les consideraba otra cosa. Los estadounidenses de todas las colonias vieron las reformas imperiales como amenazas a las libertades británicas que veían como su derecho de nacimiento. El Congreso Stamp Act de 1765 reunió a líderes coloniales en una muestra de cooperación sin precedentes contra los impuestos impuestos por el Parlamento, y los boicots populares a los bienes británicos crearon una narrativa común de sacrificio, resistencia e identidad política compartida. Se vislumbraba una rebelión.
