Casi en todas partes de Europa, otras monarquías intentaron imitar tanto el estilo como la sustancia de la corte y estilo de gobierno de Luis XIV. Construyeron palacios basados en Versalles incluso cuando la revolución militar moderna temprana, por no hablar de las constantes guerras de Luis, los obligó a buscar nuevas formas de tributación y dependencia de los funcionarios reales para construir sus ejércitos y fortificaciones. En la mayoría de los casos, desde Suecia hasta Austria, los monarcas elaboraron compromisos con sus nobles que vieron beneficiarse a ambas partes, generalmente a expensas del campesinado.
