En una pieza musical, es posible que no se presenten claramente filas de doce tonos. Una forma de presentación es la superposición, donde la nota final de una fila es la nota inicial de la siguiente fila.
Las filas también pueden presentarse contrapuntalmente o armónicamente. En el siguiente ejemplo, la fila se separa en tres tetrachordos y se presenta contrapuntalmente.
En el último ejemplo de esta sección, las dos filas se presentan en textura melodía-acompañamiento, con P0 conteniendo la melodía y R0 ocurriendo como acordes.
Un analista intentaría primero encontrar una presentación clara de una fila de doce tonos en algún lugar de la composición para analizar armonías.
