Una función de estado es aquella en la que el cambio diferencial está determinado únicamente por los estados finales y no por los estados intervinientes. La mayoría de las variables termodinámicas son funciones de estado y, por lo tanto, los cambios de propiedad están determinados por los estados finales y no por la ruta del proceso. Excepciones notables son el trabajo y el calor.
Las funciones de estado termodinámico más comunes con las que trataremos incluyen
- Energía Interna (U),
- Entropía (S),
- Entalpía (H),
- Helmotz Energy (A), y
- Energía Gibbs (G).
