Para ilustrar, extendemos la descripción anterior de un andador en una celosía 1D que puede caminar hacia la izquierda o hacia la derecha por una distancia de cantidad\(Δx\) por cada intervalo de tiempo\(Δt\). Sin embargo, en este caso existe una probabilidad desigual de pisar a la derecha (+) o a la izquierda (—) durante\(\Delta t: P_+ \neq P_-\). Hablando probabilísticamente, el cambio de posición para un intervalo de tiempo dado se puede expresar como

Vemos que la posición promedio de los caminantes aleatorios depende de la diferencia en las tasas de paso a izquierda y derecha. Para ayudar a vincular el paso a paso con el tiempo, definimos constantes de velocidad para caminar hacia la izquierda o hacia la derecha
\[ k_{\pm} = \dfrac{P_{\pm}}{\Delta t} \]
con\(k_+ \neq k_-\). Entonces la ecuación\ ref {12.2.1} puede escribirse como

Expresando la Ecuación\ ref {12.2.3} como resultado de muchos pasos dice que la media de la distribución de posición se comporta como el movimiento lineal tradicional: ⟩ x (t) ⟩ = x 0 + v x t.
¿Qué pasa con la varianza en la distribución? Calcular el valor cuadrático medio\(x\) de la ecuación\ ref {12.2.1} da

Usando esto para calcular la varianza en\(x\):

y luego comparando con ⟩ 1/2 = 2Dt, lleva a la conclusión de que la amplitud de la distribución σ se extiende como lo haría en ausencia de una velocidad de deriva, y el coeficiente de difusión para esta caminata aleatoria sesgada viene dada por

Cuando las tasas de paso a la izquierda y derecha son las mismas, recuperamos nuestro resultado anterior 2D = ∆x 2 /∆t.
