Un sistema cerrado es efectivamente un recipiente de reacción cerrado. Como químicos nos interesan los cambios en la composición química del sistema cerrado. La condición “cerrada” significa que mientras observamos los procesos que tienen lugar dentro del sistema, no agregamos más sustancias químicas al sistema del entorno ni eliminamos sustancia química del sistema al entorno. En realidad el tratamiento termodinámico de sistemas cerrados es más sencillo que para otros sistemas. El sistema y el entorno interactúan en virtud de, por ejemplo, el calor que pasa entre el sistema y el entorno.
