Hasta este punto hemos limitado nuestra discusión a sustancias unidas covalentemente consistentes en pequeñas moléculas discretas. Las fuerzas entre estas moléculas son bastante débiles en comparación con los enlaces covalentes. Sin embargo, existen algunas sustancias unidas covalentemente en las que no existen moléculas individuales pequeñas. Estas sustancias contienen moléculas extremadamente grandes, por lo que se llaman sustancias macromoleculares. Son invariablemente sólidos a temperatura ambiente. Muy a menudo podemos considerar cada cristal de la sustancia como una sola molécula.
