    Subóxido de carbono

    El subóxido de carbono es el tercer óxido de carbono, C 3 O 2. Se elabora a partir de la deshidratación del ácido malónico, (7.7.1), con P 4 O 10 por encima de 140 °C Al igual que el dióxido de carbono, la molécula C 3 O 2 es lineal, con enlace pπ-pπ.

    El subóxido de carbono gaseoso tiene un mal olor y mientras es estable a —78 °C polimeriza a 25 °C. La fotólisis de C 3 O 2 produce el inestable C 2 O. Como se esperaba de su síntesis, el subóxido de carbono reacciona lentamente con el agua para formar ácido malónico, es decir, el reverso de (7.7.1); sin embargo, la reacción con nuceófilos más fuertes como las aminas es rápida, (7.7.2).

    Anhídrido de ácido melítico

    El anhídrido de ácido melítico (Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\) a) puede considerarse como un óxido de carbono ya que su fórmula química contiene solo carbono y oxígeno, es decir, C 12 O 9 (Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\) b).
