El ciclobutadieno es tan inestable que sus propiedades físicas no se han medido de manera confiable. El siguiente diagrama ayuda a explicar por qué el ciclobutadieno es muy inestable. Con cuatro electrones pi, ambos Orbitales Moleculares no ligantes están ocupados por separado. El ciclobutadieno es tan inestable en relación con el ciclobutano, que se describe como “antiaromático”.
