Aunque los radicales centrados en oxígeno no se forman en número significativo por abstracción directa de átomos de hidrógeno a partir de carbohidratos, estos radicales pueden producirse indirectamente con alto rendimiento a partir de derivados de carbohidratos. Dado que tales radicales son capaces de reacción interna, la abstracción intramolecular proporciona una vía para que los radicales centrados en oxígeno produzcan radicales específicos centrados en carbono y, al hacerlo, participen en reacciones sintéticamente útiles. (Alcoxilo y Alcoxilo son ambos términos utilizados para describir radicales centrados en oxígeno derivados de alcoholes. Aquí se utilizará la designación alcoxi.)
