Una reacción común de los radicales alcoxi es la abstracción de átomos de hidrógeno. Esta reacción se vuelve sintéticamente útil cuando la abstracción es interna porque tiene lugar la formación regioselectiva de un radical centrado en carbono. Esta selectividad depende de una combinación de factores que incluyen el tamaño del anillo en estado de transición, la estabilidad del radical en desarrollo y la coincidencia de polaridad entre los átomos que reaccionan. Los radicales alcoxi también pueden sufrir fragmentación de enlaces carbono-carbono que produce un grupo carbonilo y un radical centrado en carbono. No importa qué vía tome el radical alcoxi (abstracción de átomos de hidrógeno o fragmentación β), el radical centrado en carbono resultante puede experimentar nueva formación de anillo, epimerización en un centro quiral, apertura del anillo y otras reacciones características de este radical intermedio.
