La adición radical que tiene lugar por reacción en cadena se divide naturalmente en tres categorías. Estas tres son reacciones en las que (a) un radical carbohidrato se suma a un no carbohidrato insaturado, (b) un radical no carbohidrato se suma a un carbohidrato insaturado, y (c) ambos participantes de la reacción son carbohidratos. Cada grupo se puede dividir adicionalmente en tipo mecanicista, una distinción basada en si una reacción tiene una etapa de transferencia de cadena bimolecular o unimolecular.
