Aunque el mecanismo radical mostrado en el Esquema 1 ofrece una explicación razonable para las reacciones mostradas en la ecuación 2, hay incertidumbre en algunas reacciones que involucran parejas redox sobre si alguna vez se produce un radical libre. Esta incertidumbre se refleja en el mecanismo de reacción mostrado en el Esquema 2, que describe dos posibles vías para la participación de un par zinc-cobre en una reacción de adición. Una vía implica la formación de radicales por transferencia de electrones, y la segunda describe la formación de un intermedio de organozinc. La evidencia estereoquímica y los efectos solventes descritos en las dos secciones siguientes ofrecen una idea de la naturaleza de las especies reactivas generadas por un par redox típico.
