La tecnología de la información ha impulsado el cambio a escala global. Según lo documentado por Castells y Friedman, la tecnología nos ha dado la capacidad de integrarnos con personas de todo el mundo utilizando herramientas digitales. Estas herramientas han permitido a las empresas ampliar sus piscinas de mano de obra, mercados e incluso horas de operación. Pero también han traído muchas complicaciones nuevas para los negocios, que ahora deben entender regulaciones, preferencias y culturas de muchas naciones diferentes. Esta nueva globalización también ha exacerbado la brecha digital utilizando las tres etapas de Nielson. La pandemia mundial de 2020 ha acentuado tanto los problemas como los mayores esfuerzos para cerrar la brecha digital a nivel mundial.
