La inmunidad adaptativa (adquirida) se refiere a mecanismos de defensa específicos de antígeno que tardan varios días en volverse protectores y están diseñados para reaccionar y eliminar un antígeno específico. Hay dos ramas principales de las respuestas inmunes adaptativas: la inmunidad humoral y la inmunidad mediada por células. La inmunidad humoral implica la producción de anticuerpos y la inmunidad mediada por células implica la producción de linfocitos T citotóxicos, macrófagos activados, células NK activadas y citocinas.
