Las OIGs son organizaciones internacionales en las que los gobiernos son los miembros. Así, los llamamos Organizaciones Gubernamentales Internacionales u Organizaciones Intergubernamentales. Los miembros de las ONG no son gobiernos -así los llamamos Organizaciones no Gubernamentales. Generalmente, el término ONG se emplea para referirse a organizaciones de bienestar social, derechos humanos ambientales y similares. Además, hay muchos otros actores no estatales.
