En el vacío no hay ni cargas ni corrientes: $\rho=0 \mathbf{y} \mathbf{j}=\mathbf{0}$. Las ondas electromagnéticas obtenidas serán una solución particular de las ecuaciones de Maxwell. Si combinamos la tercera ecuación con la cuarta, podremos llegar a la siguiente expresión
