    En el vacío no hay ni cargas ni corrientes: $\rho=0 \mathbf{y} \mathbf{j}=\mathbf{0}$. Las ondas electromagnéticas obtenidas serán una solución particular de las ecuaciones de Maxwell. Si combinamos la tercera ecuación con la cuarta, podremos llegar a la siguiente expresión

    \[
    \nabla^{2} \mathbf{E}=\frac{1}{c^{2}} \frac{\partial^{2} \mathbf{E}}{\partial t^{2}}
    \]

    una ecuación de ondas vectorial donde el parámetro $c$ (velocidad de la luz) vale

    \[
    c=\frac{1}{\sqrt{\epsilon_{0} \mu_{0}}} \notag
    \]

    Entre las soluciones particulares que se pueden encontrar a la ecuación están las que estudiamos a continuación.
